Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Joe Schweke moved with his family in 1967 to Atlantic City, NJ, to open Belrose Galleries on the world famous Boardwalk. Along with his parents Rose & Sam (Tiny) Schweke, they enjoyed prominence as purveyors of art, antiques & rare gemstones. Their venue was frequented by celebrities, colorful local characters, and tourists from all over the world. As young as age 5, Joey, as he was known to his peers, would accompany his parents on trips the world over, buying, selling & evaluating the rare & unique.
While attending the acclaimed Pratt Institute of Design in New York City in 1977, Joe was called upon to take the helm of the family business due to his father's failing health. After living la vida loca of the 1980's, Joe settled down & married Robin in 1989, raising their five children along the beautiful white sands of the Jersey shore, before moving to Santa Barbara 2007.
Why did you choose Santa Barbara, people ask? As the old charm of Atlantic City was destroyed by the casino industry, Joe became increasingly distraught over the loss of what was once the world's playground. Restless for a change of venue, and a place where oppurtunities abound, he found Santa Barbara. He was enthralled with the sense of the historical preservation as well as the abundant natural beauty. He had found a place where appreciation for fine art and architecture had not been lost.
Upon opening Bella Rosa, in October 2007, Joe maintains his family philosophy that one must never sacrifice personal attention and service. He measures success in terms of client satisfaction. His biggest thrill is when people thank him for helping them select items which reflect their lifestyle. What could be more important than the love, peace, comfort, and beauty of one's surroundings? |
